The seasonal flower edit · Vhouse Florist
Australian peony season usually runs from late October into early December, with November a good time to buy. Some later crops continue into mid-December. The exact window shifts with the weather, variety and growing region.
Part of the pleasure is watching a rounded bud become a full, ruffled flower. Whether you are sending a birthday bouquet, marking an anniversary or bringing a little spring indoors, a few thoughtful choices will help you enjoy that transformation.
Looking for peonies at Vhouse? Every Grand and Luxury bouquet on our website includes peonies while they are in season. For a custom peony arrangement, call the store on 0449 839 999 or visit us at Westfield Miranda.
When should you buy peonies in Australia?
Plan around late spring rather than a fixed date. Victorian grower Fairview Farm Cherokee lists its peak harvest from late October to early December, while Tasmania’s Pinerise Peonies describes a mid-November to mid-December picking season. Those different windows help explain why availability changes through the season.
Early crops may arrive. Ask what is available before choosing a particular colour.
A good month to look for Australian-grown peonies and plan a seasonal bouquet.
Later crops may still be available. Confirm supply rather than relying on a Christmas-week order.
For a celebration, contact the florist as soon as you know the date. Explain whether the priority is peonies themselves, a particular shade or the overall look. If you want flowers open for a dinner or photographs, mention that too: buying on the day does not guarantee that every bud will be fully open.
Outside the Australian growing season, peonies may be imported when supply allows.
Choose the colour and the opening stage
A peony bouquet can feel quite different in coral, pale pink or deeper magenta. Here are some of the colours you may see through the season.
Ask for buds that are beginning to loosen and show their colour. Very tight buds are not automatically the freshest or best choice: peonies harvested too early may fail to open. A mix of opening stages can make the bouquet interesting to watch as it develops.
Peonies in Grand and Luxury bouquets
Every Grand and Luxury bouquet on our website includes peonies while they are in season. Regular and Classic sizes do not include peonies.
Here are five favourites. Each link opens the Grand size; Luxury adds a Phalaenopsis orchid.
- Pretty in Pink: a generous gesture in pink. Its largest size is Grand, finished with a Phalaenopsis orchid.
- Pearl Meadow: soft whites and fresh greenery.
- Sweetness: a little sweetness, beautifully arranged.
- Flamingo: pink blooms with plenty of personality.
- Sunset Garden: warm colour for a brighter day.

How to care for your peony bouquet
Start with clean water and a cool place to display the flowers. This simple routine gives the buds the best chance to open well.
- Prepare a clean vase. Use one that comfortably supports the stems and leaves room for the blooms to expand.
- Refresh the stem ends. With clean, sharp secateurs, trim about 2–3 cm from the stems before placing them in fresh water.
- Keep leaves out of the water. Remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline.
- Use cut-flower food if supplied. Follow the packet’s dilution instructions rather than adding extra powder or a homemade mixture.
- Check the water daily. Top up as needed. Refresh the water every two days, or sooner if it becomes cloudy, and keep the vase clean.
- Choose a cool display spot. Keep the bouquet away from direct sun, heaters, strong draughts and the fruit bowl.

In Sydney’s warmer spring weather, bring the bouquet indoors promptly and avoid leaving it in a parked car. At home, give opening flowers a little space rather than squeezing them tightly against one another.
How long do cut peonies last?
Around five to seven days in a vase is a useful guide, not a guarantee. Variety, freshness, opening stage and room temperature all affect the display. Australian supplier Koch & Co’s peony guide gives this typical range.
A bouquet with opening buds will look different from one already in full bloom. In a mixed arrangement, remove individual flowers as they fade so you can keep enjoying the remaining stems.
What if the buds are not opening?
Check that the stems can reach fresh water, refresh their cut ends and use flower food as directed. Give them time in a comfortable room away from direct sun. Some buds take longer than others, and a bud picked too early may never open fully.
If the bouquet is intended for a particular day, contact the florist for advice rather than trying to force the petals apart. Share a photograph so the team can see the opening stage and condition.
